A Few General Facts About Waste
The world of waste is enormous. Everything around us will eventually become waste, not only once, but several times. Just how much the total amount of waste amounts to is a question of definition, but there is political agreement that the way we treat waste is an international responsibility that cannot be confined to national borders.
There is a general concensus of opinion that waste must not be allowed to impair the quality of life locally or globally. Numerous people are therefore employed to handle waste in the best possible way and many are also involved on a voluntary basis to find improved solutions for waste, and new solutions for waste-treatment are under continual development both locally and internationally. On the political level there is a constant focus on recycling the resources that waste represents. There is also focus on reducing the total amount of waste as much as possible compared to the present situation.
Statistics show that each Norwegian produces approximately 400 kilos of waste per year from their households, a total of 2 million tons per year. In addition, industry and commerce produce much more, approximately 8 million tons per year depending on how we define waste.
According to the EEC, 3,5 tons of waste is produced per year for every european inhabitant. 26% of this comes from industry, 29% from mining and quarries, 22% from construction and demolition, 14% from households, and the remainder from agriculture and forestry. 2% of the waste-total is classified as dangerous waste that is harmful to living organisms.
